February 15, 2023 - Angela Walters

Zoom Lecture: Help! How Do I Quilt It?

Zoom Demo: Beginning Free Motion Quilting

Angela Walters says “…I love all things related to quilting! I started my quilting career over 10 years ago at the side of my husband’s grandpa. He patiently taught me the art of quilting by helping me make my first quilt, a 9 patch quilt that is still on my bed today. I can’t believe how much has changed since that first quilt! I am still a quilter, of course, but now I can add Author, Quilting Teacher, and Fabric Designer to my resume. I am still so amazed by that! I have written several books, including “Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters”, “In the Studio with Angela Walters” and the “Free-Motion Quilting Workbook” If there is one thing that I love as much as quilting, it’s talking about quilting. I love to give lectures and teach quilting classes…”

The General Meeting lecture will be in-person, with Angela being hosted via Zoom.  In this lecture, Angela will help you decide what machine quilting designs to use by having you ask the expert of your opinion, you! This lecture starts with a trunk show, a slideshow presentation full of quilted eye candy and practical tips for choosing designs. The afternoon class is a lecture/demo called "Beginning Free Motion Quilting."  This will also be hosted via Zoom.  Attendees will have the option of joining us at the Elks for a group Zoom, or joining via Zoom from home.  No machine needed.  The cost is $15 and runs from 1pm - 4pm.

April 19-20, 2023 - Julia Fikse

Lecture: Quilt Appraisal, Values and Repairing Quilts

1/2 Day Workshop: Bed Turning

Thursday: Scheduled Quilt Appraisals

1/2 Day Workshop: “Bed Turning” – Julia will spend 15 minutes per quilt with the workshop participants, featuring quilts of their choice.  This is not a certified appraisal, but a good opportunity to hear what she has to say about your quilt.  Sign-ups are required for this ½ day workshop and there are many spots available.  The cost will be $15, another great opportunity to use PPQG scholarship fund!  Contact Danielle Keenan at ppqq1vp@gmail.com to sign up.

Thursday: Scheduled Quilt Appraisals – Schedule a 30 minute quilt appointment ahead of time.  Julia will examine the quilt in person, take photos, write a description, and fill out the appraisal, along with a value and her seal.  Julia says "I would like to make sure that each person who signs up to have a quilt appraised sends me a photo in advance to make sure it is worth their time and money to have an appraisal done -- I don't appraise quilts that would value under $250.  I can appraise quilts from any era, antique, vintage, contemporary, tops, pieced coverlets, "tied" pieced quilts, and fiber art quilts."  Contact Danielle Keenan at ppqq1vp@gmail.com to sign up.

Julia Fikse is the Quilt Ninja®. She has 25 years of experience in the textile industry and is an AQS Certified quilt appraiser based in Los Angeles, CA. She currently holds memberships in a variety of quilt-related organizations including American Quilter Society, Modern Quilt Guild, Valley Modern Quilters, San Fernando Valley Quilter's Association, PAAQT and American Quilter’s Society.

May 17-18, 2023 - Dee Christopher

Lecture: Value – It’s All the Rage

1 1/2 Workshop: How Do You Value Color?

Dee describes her lecture as “Color theory is an important topic and much has been said and written about it.  Let's go beyond the color wheel, complimentary colors, triatic, etc. and get down to how we choose the fabrics for our quilts and what is or isn't most important.”

For her workshop, she says “we will make a small tabletop or pillow cover to learn to choose backgrounds for various types of quilts.  A background can make or break how much you love your quilt when finished so let's play with the possibilities as we choose between our main fabrics and backgrounds, especially on sampler and contemporary quilt designs.  Time will also be spent on reading and making a pattern your own best version.”

June 21-22, 2023 - Mary Lou Weidman

Lecture: “Out of the Box”

Workshop: Self Portraits

This lecture discusses how to get out, stretch, and stay out of the box. How to learn new things, go new directions and take the road less traveled.

We chose the self-portraits workshop to inspire the 2023 PPQG Quilt Challenge -- “Faces”!
